Art Gallery in New Plymouth, Art in New Plymouth, Artist in New Plymouth, Museum in New Plymouth

Born into a Taranaki colonial family in 1886, she was the youngest daughter of Frances Elizabeth Atkinson and New Plymouth barrister Clement Govett. Her vision for a contemporary art museum has provided a window to the world for the small coastal community of New Plymouth, and become one of the most respected art institutions on the Pacific Rim. Pioneering, daring and what Len Lye called the 'swingiest art gallery in the antipodes', the Govett Brewster is a contemporary art museum of the Pacific Rim, with an international reputation and reach. A freedom and sense of self determination keenly felt by our founder, New Plymouth born Monica Brewster , when she dreamed of an art museum for her city. The Regent Theatre in New Plymouth before it was transformed into the Govett Brewster Art Gallery in 1970.
Just months before his death in 1980, Lye established the Len Lye Foundation to continue his artistic vision and, recognising the strength of the relationship between artist and museum, he chose the Govett Brewster to be the home of Len Lye. After more than 30 years in the planning, in July 2015 we opened as the combined Govett Brewster Art Gallery Len Lye Centre with a renewed vision and vigour to promote and develop contemporary art and the work and vision of Len Lye. The Govett Brewster Art Gallery Len Lye Centre runs three residency programmes which reflect upon the value that guest artists and film curators bring to the life of a contemporary art museum, and the role we play in enriching and developing the arts. Networking and exchange with local artists, curatorial staff and the public are enabled through collaboration, talks and visits to other main centres and institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand. With the increasing global interest in the work of Len Lye, this residency connects the international film community with the collection and archives of the experimental film pioneer Len Lye, along with other historic and contemporary New Zealand filmmakers. The residency is managed by Paul Brobbel Len Lye Curator with operational support and assistance from other curatorial staff specific to the programme.
It involves working with cinematic media, artists, practitioners and institutions throughout New Zealand. Previously, Simon was Head of Programming and Development at MAK the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts Contemporary Art, in Vienna, with responsibilities for museum management, curatorial development and fundraising. Simon first joined the Govett Brewster in 2002 as the then Curator of Contemporary Art. Prior to that she was the Programme Coordinator at the Goethe Institut in Wellington realising a myriad projects in cooperation with New Zealand cultural institutions. Paul’s role is to support the development and delivery of Len Lye exhibitions along with caring for the Len Lye Collection.
Sarah’s role is to support the Len Lye Curator in the research, development, and exhibition associated with the Len Lye Collection. From a journalism and news reporting background, Kelly has worked in various media from newspapers, radio, magazines to television. Chris oversees the day to day management of the Govett Brewster’s current Ministry of Education funded Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom LEOTC programme and has fun designing and implementing education programmes for all levels of students, the majority currently being used by primary school students and teachers. Rebecca works mainly within the Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom LEOTC programme funded by the Ministry of Education, designing and implementing Govett Brewster education programmes for pre school to tertiary students.
Primary school students and teachers are the most frequent education visitors but students come from all types of schools and have very different reasons for immersing themselves in the world of art. As a part of the education team Rebecca also helps design and run hands on art making workshops every school holidays. Morgana has a background in performing arts and enjoys the challenge of developing programmes that use contemporary art to introduce students and teachers to te ao M ori
